Early History of the Dana Point-San Juan Capistrano Area

Today’s Dana Point-San Juan Capistrano area was originally occupied by the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation. The Mission at San Juan Capistrano was founded on All Saints’ Day November 1, 1776, by Spanish Catholic Franciscans, who built a booming trade in leather hides. Those hides were transported to remote markets aboard ships, which used to anchor in the calm waters in the lee of today’s Dana Point Headlands. In 1818, Hippolyte de Bouchard, from faraway Argentina, anchored his ship here while conducting his raid on the mission. Following Spain’s emancipation of Mexico in 1821, a gradual decline in the mission’s status ensued. Richard Henry Dana visited the area in 1835 while crewing aboard the sailing brig “Pilgrim,” and Dana documented what he found in his classic novel, “Two Years Before the Mast.” Dana considered the high bluffs and sheltered coves of this area to be the most beautiful spot on the California coast.

By the 1840s, the Franciscans had all but abandoned the Mission. A smallpox epidemic swept through the area in 1862, nearly wiping out the remaining Juaneño Indians; and by 1900, most of the Juaneños had vacated San Juan Capistrano. Severe flooding destroyed part of the mission’s front arcade in 1915, and a year later, heavy storms washed away an end of the barracks. On April 21, 1918, the San Jacinto Earthquake caused damage to mission buildings. In 1919, author Johnston McCulley created the character “Zorro” and chose Mission San Juan Capistrano as the setting for the first novella, ‘The Curse of Capistrano.” Both Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano have served as the backdrop for other books, and films.

Edward Doheny was a U.S. oil tycoon, who in 1892 drilled the first successful oil well in the Los Angeles City Oil Field, setting off the petroleum boom in Southern California and making a fortune in 1902 when he sold his properties. The Dohenys also owned a great deal of coastal land in Dana Point, which was donated to the State of California for Doheny State Beach. Dana Point-Capistrano Beach went on to become “Dana Point,” the 28th city in Orange County on January 1, 1989.
